About Us
Oppie started with a group of people from a diverse set of professional backgrounds and life experiences coming together to answer a common question: ‘what can we do to make sure the clean energy transition uplifts communities without access to reliable energy and electricity?’ Part of our answer lies in targeting public use, industrial facilities, as a way to bridge class-gaps that have left communities behind.
When critical centers of transportation, internet, and heating are un-electrified or under-electrified, not only does sustaining basic human needs and functions become more difficult, but communities are more vulnerable to brownouts and blackouts.
It’s our job to create a future where no one is left in the dark.
The Problem:
According to sources such as the Energy for Growth Hub and International Atomic Energy Agency, approximately 45% of the world lacks access to consistent, reliable power. According to energy consultancy Wood Mackenzie, Renewable energy will become a one third cheaper option to fossil fuels by the year 2030.
Yet, the integration of a clean energy sourced grid needs the involvement of both regions in the global west and global south collaborating on a reliable, clean energy grid. There must be an unspoken demand to increase the standard of living across African regions, many of whom suffer from crises caused by colonial mentalities, to be exchanged for productive and mutually beneficial partnerships between public institutions and emerging technology.
